Since 1902 Children’s Home Society of North Carolina (CHS) has been instrumental in supporting adoption throughout North…
If you are considering adoption, one of the first questions you may have is: How does the process actually work?
At CHS, we walk with birth parents through every step—providing clear answers, support, and guidance along the way.
At CHS, we believe no one should have to navigate those decisions alone.
A Safe Place to Explore Your Options
Every situation is unique. That is why CHS starts by listening.
Whether you are considering parenting, adoption, or another plan of care, our role is to help you understand your options, not to pressure you toward a specific decision. Services are free, confidential, and focused entirely on your needs and goals.
Our team can help connect you with community resources, provide counseling and guidance, and walk alongside you as you think through what is next.
If You Are Considering Adoption
For those who choose adoption, CHS provides comprehensive support throughout the entire process.
This includes:
- Access to thoroughly screened, diverse adoptive families in North Carolina
- Education about your rights as a birth parent
- Guidance in creating an adoption plan that reflects your wishes
- Support during your hospital stay and help communicating your plan with medical staff
- Ongoing, lifelong support services after placement
Most importantly, adoption through CHS is voluntary and centered on your choices. You remain in control of key decisions – from selecting an adoptive family to determining the type of contact you want after placement.
Understanding Your Rights
Making an informed decision means understanding your rights.
Birth parents working with CHS:
- Do not place their child into foster care or state custody
- Can choose the adoptive family or ask the agency for support in making that decision
- Can decide between identified (open) and non-identified (closed) adoption
- Have a legally defined opportunity to change their mind after signing adoption paperwork
Our role is to ensure you fully understand these options so you can move forward with confidence.
Support That Continues
One of the most important aspects of CHS services is what happens after placement.
We provide lifelong support services, recognizing that emotions, questions, and connections continue long after the adoption is finalized.
Whether that includes ongoing communication, updates, or access to additional resources, we remain a partner in the journey.
